Ideas for my EPQ: George Orwell

I decided to begin an EPQ as I thought this would be a good method to improve my analytical skills, and by doing my own independent research would help me build fundamental skills for the future, when I go to University.

I chose Orwell as my subject as I believed this would fit well into my other A-Level subjects I am studying; Literature and History. I believe by covering an author in such depth would significantly help my skills in these subjects. I will have to research the context of his books, such as British Burma, and his life as a whole, helping me with my research and analysing skills in history, I will also have to do textual analyses of his bibliography, helping me with my English. I also chose him out of my own personal passion for his writing, he was a fascinating figure, whose books and essays cover a wide range of issues, this makes it difficult to work out what angle or perspective I want to analysis his work for my final project; I think I want to speak about how his literature is still relevant to our time, I will analysis aspects of his literature with context and then argue how his work still resonates with people now and why.

I decided to select small collection of Orwells work, analysing their meanings and legacy, then apply why this work is relevant to the 21st Century.

Animal Farm:

Although largely thought as a metaphor for the rise of communism within a power vacuum, I personally think the message of the novella is more universal going against populist leaders; thus referencing modern politics.

1984:

Against authoritarianism both on the left and the right; speak about the cold war of the internet, rise of invasive technology.

For my final project I am going to do a dissertation.
